Silicon Valley companies win UK innovation awards

05 May 2010
Mountain View-based Ribbit, which won in the service provision category, has developed technology that lets users merge mobile calls with the Internet and convert voicemail into text.

The company was founded in February 2006 and funded by San Francisco-based firms Alsop Louie Partners and KPG Ventures, Santa Monica-based Allegis Capital and Menlo Park-based Peninsula Ventures.

In 2008 BT Group plc acquired Ribbit for $105 million in cash. BT Group, formerly British Telecommunications plc, is the privatized state telecommunications operator in the UK.

“We’re very honored by this award in service provision,” said Ribbit CEO Ted Griggs. “That we received such recognition encourages us to further provide the best service and technological innovations we can for communications in the cloud-based environment.”

Campbell-based G24, which won in the technology category, makes dye-sensitized solar cells, an alternative to traditional silicon solar cells. The modules are used for powering mobile electronic devices.

G24, which was a winner in December, 2009 in the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal's clean-green technology category, has a manufacturing facility in Cardiff, Wales, and another at the Ecole Polytechnique.

Sales, marketing and advanced research and development are based in Campbell.

“We pride ourselves on our work in developing and refining renewable energy for consumer applications.

Receiving this award in technology reinforces our commitment to bringing innovations in sustainable energy to citizens around the globe and improvement in their quality of life,” said Robert Hertzberg, a director of G24 Innovations.

The BritWeek UKTI Business Innovation Awards recognize outstanding innovations in design, technology and service provision from companies based in both the UK and California. UK Trade & Investment helps companies bring investment to the UK economy.
