Thin Film solar cells this year, picked up the evening's headline award - The NESTA Rushlight Award -designed to celebrate the UK and Ireland's 'leading achievement in addressing a key environmental issue in the last two years'.
The company, for whom production marks the commercialisation of over eighteen years of research and development, also picked up the Rushlight Renewable Energy Award which recognises the 'most significant achievement towards the exploitation and adoption of renewable energy sources'.
G24i's revolutionary DST technology can be mass produced through proprietary roll-to-roll manufacturing and is not reliant upon expensive silicon, as most solar cells are. It is therefore affordable for developing world applications and makes solar power a viable portable energy source in these regions for the first time. The company is focused on producing solar-powered mobile phone chargers for the developing world as the first application of the technology and has recently announced a pioneering deal with Master IT Ltd in Kenya.
Other unique properties - its light weight, durability, flexibility and ability to produce electricity in low light and cloudy conditions - will make solar a viable source of energy for a whole new range of industries, including construction, clothing, portable electronics and defence.
