In life you have two passions: travel and food? We might as well tell you that there are many of us in this case! To cook what you like when you are camping or hiking, there is a simple solution that has long proven its effectiveness, the gas stove.

However, there are a lot of choices to be made on this type of product: number of burners, size, power… it’s easy to get lost in it, especially when the technical data sheets are not always impeccably clear. That’s why we decided to save you time.

We analysed and compared 27 gas stove models over 31 hours, taking into account the opinions of 629 consumers. In the end, we came up with a selection of seven stoves that fit all budgets and uses. A guide to the most important criteria is also available.

Following our last update, our favourite model is the Gas ONE GS-3400P: in addition to being compact, stable and affordable, it can work with both butane and propane.

Gas ONE GS-3400P

Gas ONE GS-3400P

Are you looking for a simple gas stove, which will allow you to prepare good food during hikes or short stays, and you therefore want to favour compactness and practicality? The Gas One GS-3400P is the perfect model, which has the advantage of being able to work with butane or propane.

Gas ONE GS-3400P Review

As the Gas One GS-3400P works with butane or propane (an adapter is included), it is suitable when the temperature drops below 0°C.

We made it our first choice mainly because of its ease of use. Thanks to the piezo ignition, you don’t need to carry a lighter or matches with you: not only is it safer, but you also have less to think about when you go on a trip.

It’s a compact stove, has a burner and is quite light, especially when compared to the competition.

For a hike or a short stay, it allows you to boil water and easily cook a few vegetables or meat in a pan or pot. Some people also use it as a backup fire in case of a power outage.

You shouldn’t have any trouble finding a suitable place for it, as it is equipped with non-slip feet. This is not the only safety option; a system for stopping the flow of gas and ejecting the cartridge is also provided, to avoid any risk if the flow becomes abnormally high.

Finally, the Gas One GS-3400P comes with a carrying case. It is convenient, but some buyers find it lacks robustness. This seems acceptable to us given the excellent quality/price ratio offered.

Coleman Classic Propane Stove – Two-burner stove

Coleman Classic Propane Stove

Do you trust established brands and buy a stove to have a good time with your family? If so, the Coleman Classic Propane Stove is a two-burner model that should appeal to you, especially since it’s very good value for your money.

Coleman Classic Propane Stove Review

Coleman is no longer being introduced, and this model is one of the manufacturer’s great classics. It’s perfect for camping, preparing meals for a family of four or five.

The two burners allow you to position kettles, pots, pans or saucepans with maximum diameters of 25.4 and 30.5 cm (10 and 12 in.). They are each controlled by a knurled knob, but be aware that the control you have over the fire remains modest compared to some more expensive references.

Ignition requires a lighter or matches, but does not present any particular difficulty once the propane tank is connected.

What we really like about this stove are Coleman’s signature technologies: PerfectHeat and PerfectFlow. They allow you, respectively, to enjoy more power with less fuel and more even cooking.

The Coleman Classic Propane Stove features windproof panels. You have the option of adjusting them (to provide adequate space for your utensils), or use them as side shelves if the weather is nice.

For transport, nothing could be simpler: the stove closes directly and you just have to take it with you. It takes up a little more space than single-burner models, but it fits in a vehicle without any problems.

You don’t have to worry about the robustness: the manufacturer remains true to its good reputation in this area.

Features

Spacious stove that can accommodate 1 stove and 1 pot at the same time

PerfectHeat technology to limit the use of fuel

PerfectFlow system for even cooking

Adjustable wind protection panels that can be used as side shelves

Two control knobs for burners

Power: 20000 BTU/h (in total)

Burners: 2

Fuel: propane

Pros:

Two burners at a light price

Very good wind protection

Homogeneous and economical cooking

Cons:

Low flame adjustability

Our verdict

The Coleman Classic Propane Stove is simply the best gas stove for a quiet family getaway. It’s simple and safe, and it cooks your food evenly and intelligently. With two burners and quality, the average price seems like a fair price.

Camp Chef EX60LW – High-end Gas Stove

Camp Chef EX60LW

You never say no to a tasty barbecue, but most of the time you cook normally, and you would like to have a single product that can adapt to both requirements? Then this is exactly what Camp Chef EX60LW is all about.

Camp Chef EX60LW Review

Let’s start by highlighting the power of this propane stove: you have two burners that each deliver 30000 BTU/hour, for a total of 60000 BTU/hour. This is well above average, and very useful at parties or family gatherings, to quickly prepare large quantities of food.

It’s also practical when camping and for longer stays: you can enjoy what you like and make tea or coffee. Windproof panels are provided to promote good cooking and limit safety risks.

Camp Chef EX60LW’s biggest strength is its versatility. Indeed, it is designed to accommodate Camp Chef accessories (to be purchased separately) such as grills, baking trays or even a pizza oven.

You can organize a barbecue while preparing pasta, soup or vegetables in a casserole.

Although slightly larger than most competitors, this product is still easy to transport because it has large removable legs. Because they are also adjustable, you enjoy good stability, even on uneven ground.

The use is intuitive: the levers allow you to choose whether you want a low, medium or high heat. Thanks to the excellent control offered, your vegetables, beef or salmon will all be cooked to perfection, tender and juicy.

Both burners are made of cast aluminium, and the stove is naturally of impeccable solidity.

Features

Can accommodate Camp Chef accessories (grids, plates…).

Equipped with adaptable and removable feet, stable and easy to take everywhere.

Very good flame control thanks to the joysticks.

Cast aluminium burners, excellent general solidity.

Anti-wind panels for trouble-free cooking even in turbulent weather.

Delivered with 1 hose of 0.9 m/3 ft and 1 regulator.

Power: 60000 BTU/h (in total). Burners: 2.

Cooking dimensions: 35.6*81.3 cm/14*32 in.

Cooking area: 2890 cm²/448 in².

Weight: 13.8 kg/30.5 lb.

Height: 73.7 cm/29 in.

Pros:

Both stable and portable

Power and solidity

Compatibility with accessories

Cons:

More expensive than the competition

Our verdict

With the right accessories, the Camp Chef EX60LW becomes a truly portable kitchen station on which you can prepare almost anything. It’s a little more expensive than the competition, but it’s also more stable, more solid and much more powerful: if you really have a taste for adventure, there’s no need to hesitate.

Coleman Bottle Top – Low budget gas stove

Coleman Bottle Top
Coleman Bottle Top

You buy a gas stove as a precaution, to cope with possible power outages and to cook during short impromptu stays? You probably don’t want to spend too much money. And you don’t have to, because an affordable model like the Coleman Bottle Top should do the trick.

Coleman Bottle Top Review

The operation of this product is very simple: you place it on a 1 lb. propane cylinder, and that’s it. You then have the option of putting a 20 cm or 8 in. diameter pot, pan or kettle on the burner. The power is quite impressive considering the compactness: 10000 BTU/h.

As you can see, it’s more of a standby model, which can make your life easier if there are frequent power outages where you live. It’s also great for short weekend stays.

Nonetheless, Coleman has made a point of offering a well-made tool. In particular, you benefit from the manufacturer’s two key technologies. PerfectFlow regulates the flame to homogenize the cooking process, while PerfectHeat limits fuel consumption, which is more environmentally friendly and more economical.

In addition, there is also a control handle: you can adapt the flame to the task at hand, whether it’s boiling water or keeping your vegetable and poultry dish warm.

In windy conditions, you can still use the Coleman Botte Top, as it is equipped with windproof devices. Of course, they don’t offer the same protection as the side panels of the more expensive models, but they are still very effective.

Finally, you should know that despite the low price generally offered for this product, the manufacturing quality is considered very good by the majority of buyers (which is not really a surprise when you know the brand).

Features:

Portable and easy to stabilize, fits directly on the propane cylinder.

Equipped with windbreaks to keep the flame out of the way.

Control lever available.

Wide base to accommodate 20 cm/8″ diameter utensils.

PerfectFlow and PerfectHeat technologies: efficient and even cooking.

Power: 10000 BTU/h. Burner: 1.

Fuel: 1 lb. tank (for 2.5 hours of operation).

Pros:

Zero space requirement

Windbreak elements

Coleman Technologies

Cons:

For simple cooking only

Our verdict

The Coleman Bottle Top is limited to simple uses (quick cooking and hot beverage preparation). Nevertheless, it can help you in case of electricity problems, is affordable and easy to transport, and most importantly, it is by far the smallest and cheapest stove on our list.

Gas One B-5450

Gas One B-5450

Are you looking for a gas stove, a burner is enough for you, but you don’t feel like looking at the entry-level options? Among the most interesting references, there is a particularly high-performance and stable one that can meet the expectations of uncompromising buyers: the Gas One B-5450.

Gas One B-5450 Review

If you order the Gas One B-5450, you will receive it fully assembled and immediately ready to use, which is always a pleasure!

Simple in appearance, this gas stove is in fact a real power monster, capable of delivering up to 200,000 BTU. So you might as well know that you won’t have to wait too long for the water to boil or for the potatoes and vegetables in the pot to cook. With the right pot you can roast a turkey.

It also benefits from an excellent manufacturing quality. The burner is made of cast iron and the legs are made of welded metal. The latter are very practical, as they allow the Gas One B-5450 to be easily stabilized on most surfaces, making it a good ally in camping in particular.

You are looking at a relatively compact and lightweight product, which is also ideal for pre-party parties, or for hunting and fishing. Thanks to its exemplary solidity, you can transport the Gas One B-5450 without stress. It comes with a braided steel hose and runs on propane (so it can withstand the cold).

This stove is still fairly simple to use, but may seem a little less intuitive than other models.

In fact, you don’t have a flame control handle. However, you do have a rotating panel to control the oxygen input, in order to obtain a flame that is as clean and blue as possible. It takes a bit of practice and control, but it’s very satisfying when you get the hang of it!

Features

Cast iron burner supported by a welded metal frame of great stability.

No assembly required, you receive the stove ready to use.

Ventilation control device.

Supplied with a braided steel pipe.

Power: 200000 BTU. Burner: 1.

Fuel: propane, 20 lb. tank.

Weight: 9.5 kg/21 lb.

Dimensions : 39.4*30.5 (H) cm/15.5*12 (H) in.

Pros:

Perfect robustness

Efficient oxygen control

Zero assembly

Cons:

No controller

Our verdict

Efficient and beautifully finished: here’s how to sum up the Gas One B-5450. It’s not the easiest gas stove to adjust, but if you’re demanding in terms of build quality and stability, it should satisfy you. It also stands out for its impressive power, and can boil water very quickly.

Koblenz PFK-400

Koblenz PFK-400

Do you love to cook, no matter what the situation, and need to be able to cook various ingredients separately to make delicious dishes? Then you need a large number of burners. The Koblenz PFK-400 has four of them, doesn’t cost too much and has real style.

Koblenz PFK-400 Review

The first thing that strikes you about this product is its sophisticated appearance, which is more stylish than most gas stoves. This makes it a great option if you want to use it especially for gatherings with friends and family in your garden.

The second thing that attracts attention is the number of burners. There are four burners, each with a handle to manage the flame. You can boil water at full speed while your vegetables, meat or fruit can enjoy slow cooking that will reveal their tenderness.

It is much more practical to prepare sauces and good small dishes at the same time. Naturally, the Koblenz PFK-400 is a little larger than some of the single or twin burner models, but it fits easily in a car and is suitable for camping or pregame parties.

A small panel offers your flames proper protection from the wind. The product has no legs or skid, but in practice it is rarely difficult to find a flat surface to put it on (a rock or even a simple folding table).

We really like this gas stove, which has many advantages: good aesthetics, intuitive operation and affordable price. It’s powered by a standard propane tank, which means it works when it’s cold.

However, we have chosen to place it further down in our list for one simple reason: the hose is not included. Rest assured: it is not expensive to order one separately, but it would have been wise to include it.

Features

Four burners and four knurls to adapt the cooking to any food

Elegant stove-style finish, which allows you to entertain in style

Relatively compact profile suitable for vehicle transport

Small porcelain windscreen to protect the flames

Power: 16000 BTU/h. Burners: 4

Fuel: propane

Dimensions: 51*62.4*12.9 cm/20.1*24.6*5.1 in.

Warranty: 1 year.

Pros:

4 burners

Very elegant

Remains easy to transport

Cons:

Delivered without hose

Our verdict

We would have really liked the hose to come with this stove. Apart from this detail, we find it very nice: it looks good and allows you to cook various foods while being compact enough. It’s a great solution for families and for creative cooking enthusiasts.

Eastman 90411

Eastman 90411

When you cook, do you like to vary the utensils and the horizons? It’s not always easy to find a gas stove that combines compactness, high adaptability and high power. But it’s not impossible, as the Eastman 90411 proves.

Eastman 90411 Review

First of all, you should know that this product is more specifically designed to accommodate woks (diameter 45.7 cm, or 18 in.) or large pots. It is therefore an ideal model for preparing a large quantity of fried vegetables or a rich soup to share with the family.

It does, however, have some interesting features. For example, it benefits from a patented design that allows it to consume less fuel while having an excellent power output (65000 BTU).

Thanks to aeration, you can control the incoming oxygen. It takes a little time to master the process perfectly, but once this is done you will easily get the beautiful clear blue flame that you look for in gas stoves.

And most importantly, you benefit from adjustable feet. These can be adjusted from 45.7 to 66 cm, which corresponds to 18 and 26 in. Simply screw or unscrew. It’s handy for greater stability wherever you go, and also to accommodate your cooking utensils more easily.

The legs can be removed for transport and storage, making this stove more compact than you might think at first glance.

The Eastman 90411 is a product with excellent durability, which justifies a slightly higher price than the average single burner gas stove. One small drawback to note, however: over time, the paint can have a certain tendency to tire.

Note that, apart from the propane tank, there are no additional costs: the stove comes with a hose equipped with a regulator.

Features:

Adjustable feet from 45.7 to 66 cm/18 to 26 in., removable for storage

Suitable for 34 l/36 qt kettles and 45.7 cm/18 in. woks

Ventilation for better control of flame intensity and colour

Patented design for less fuel consumption

Supplied with hose and regulator

Power: 65000 BTU/h. Burner: 1

Fuel: propane

Pros:

Suitable for large woks and pots

Easily adjustable feet

Reasonable gas consumption

Cons:

Fairly basic design

Our verdict

The Eastman 90411 remains fairly simple, but fulfills its objectives: it easily accommodates woks and pots to prepare good family meals, and is also powerful and fuel-efficient. Its adjustable and removable feet are an undeniable strong point for people who are particularly mobile.

Things to know before buying a gas stove

Wondering about the circumstances under which a gas stove is suitable, or how these tools are used? Don’t worry, here you will find answers to the most commonly asked questions.

How does a gas stove work?

Usually, you simply connect it (via a hose with a pressure reducer or directly) to a propane or butane cylinder. Then there are two possibilities for ignition :

Manual ignition, i.e. using a match, lighter or other tool for the flame to appear.

Piezo-electric ignition, the flame appears directly by turning the control knob.

You must then protect the flame from the wind, and if you have ventilation, make sure that you provide oxygen to the flame so that it is as blue and clear as possible.

When is a gas stove suitable?

Almost all of them! Gas stoves can be used for pregame parties, with family, friends, hiking, camping… they are more flexible than barbecues, as you can put your own pots in them… it’s just a matter of choosing the right model for you!

Butane or propane, what’s the difference?

The vast majority of available models run on propane or both butane and propane. We advise you to choose propane: with butane, you can’t get a flame if it’s less than 0°C (32°F), which quickly becomes disturbing in winter.

Are gas stoves safe?

You are facing kitchen appliances that produce fire, so you must be vigilant and keep children or pets away. You must also be careful with gas cylinders, and make sure that the connection is made properly. The dangers are no greater than with an ordinary stove or barbecue.

Is having a gas stove useful in case of a power failure?

Of course, it is very useful to continue boiling water and cooking hot food. We still invite you to try out your stove before a power failure occurs, so that you can be sure that it works. It is also a good solution in a cottage, for example.

Can it be used indoors?

It is not recommended or forbidden on most products.

Our selection for buying a Gas Stove in 2020

You don’t know which model to get, you hesitate between some references and would like to decide between them? Here are the key criteria to consider.

The price

Many factors affect the price: power, number of burners, manufacturing quality, etc. To benefit from an efficient and compact appliance, count a minimum of 40$. Then, the most expensive models can exceed $200.

Number of burners

On a stove, the number of burners is very important, since it corresponds to the number of kitchen utensils (pot, stove, …) that you will be able to place. Attention: don’t forget to also check the accepted diameters. There are usually one, two or four burners.

The power

The power is expressed in BTU/h. There is no secret: the higher it is, the faster you will cook your food or boil water, and the more you choose a top-of-the-range model, the higher it tends to be.

Just note a little subtlety: often it is the total power that is indicated, and then you have to divide it by the number of burners to get a closer idea of the actual performance on each flame.

Ease of use

In addition to the hose pressure regulator, which is used to control pressure and can be equipped with safety devices, flame regulation is generally done :

With a simple joystick, like on a stove. This is intuitive, but sometimes a little imprecise, especially on the cheaper models.

By means of ventilation (you turn a plate to let in more or less oxygen). You have to learn how to control the system, but it’s more precise and you have less trouble getting a really blue flame.

Compactness

As a general rule, a gas stove with controlled dimensions and light weight is preferred, especially if you are hiking and will have it on your back all day.

For camping and travelling, if you travel by car, the size and weight are less important, choose models that suit your cooking habits and family appetite.

Adaptability and stability

Some stoves are equipped with removable and adjustable legs, making it easier to set them up wherever you want and store them afterwards.
