You have the impression that your clothes are always wrinkled? Maybe your iron is a little tired, and it’s time to change it. It’s a good thing: technology has evolved a lot, and the models sold nowadays are often better and safer.

However, it’s easy to get lost in a somewhat confusing offer. Indeed, each model has its own features, maintenance procedures are different, and so is the power. It is not necessarily easy to set a budget that ideally matches your requirements.

That’s why we wanted to lend you a hand. To help you see things more clearly, we analyzed and compared 24 models of iron sold in Canada over a 37-hour period, taking into account the opinions of 355 purchasers of these products.

Following our last update, our favourite model is the Black+ Decker Digital Advantage. Easy to handle and with 7 ironing modes, it will make this chore a little less painful.

Black+Decker Digital Advantage

Black+Decker Digital Advantage

You’re not a big fan of household chores, but you want to have impeccable, crease-free clothes? There are irons that allow you to achieve this without too much effort. Among them, the Black+Decker Digital Advantage seems to us to be the most convincing.

What we think of the Black+Decker Digital Advantage

Black+Decker is one of the leading manufacturers of irons. So you don’t have to worry about manufacturing quality or efficiency (which is in the middle of the market).

The real strength of the Black+Decker Digital Advantage is its intelligent design and the ease with which it can be used on any type of clothing.

In fact, the device has seven modes. Their use is clearly indicated on the tank, so it is frankly difficult to make mistakes. All the more so since the number of the chosen mode is displayed on a very practical LCD screen. It is very rare to choose a setting that is not appropriate for the fabric you are ironing.

Input is comfortable thanks to the large handle and easy setup. You can change the temperature or steam flow with a simple thumbwheel. Two buttons (steam and water spray) are located just below the screen to help you get rid of creases without any difficulty.

The iron is very easy to handle, thanks to a stainless steel soleplate that slides easily. Moreover, little effort is required for maintenance, since it benefits from a non-drip and self-cleaning design.

In addition, if you do not use it for a while and it is in an improper position, the iron will automatically turn off, thus avoiding safety risks.

Our only small criticism of this product is its weight: the on-board technologies make it slightly heavier than average.

The easy-to-use option for everyone.
7 ironing modes, with the selected one displayed on the LCD screen.
Wheel for easy adjustment of temperature and steam flow.
Two buttons for steam diffusion or water spray.
Stainless steel soleplate with good glide, ergonomic handle.
Self-cleaning, non-drip and with an automatic shut-off function.
120V/ 1500 watts.
Dimensions: 28*14.2 cm / 11*5.6 in.

Easy settings, with display
Ergonomic input
Very satisfactory quality/price ratio

May seem a little heavy

Our verdict

For you, ironing is above all a chore to eliminate and you want to do it quickly and well, without having to think too much? Then the Black+Decker Digital Advantage with its many easy-to-access modes is one of the best solutions available on the market. The device is just a little heavier than average.

Rowenta Focus IIRowenta Focus II

What defines a good iron to you is speed and durability? To eliminate any frustration, choosing a top-of-the-line model can be a good idea. The Rowenta Focus II, made in Germany, is a powerful and beautifully crafted iron that should not disappoint you.

What people think of the Rowenta Focus II

Contrary to what sometimes happens on high-end devices, here you don’t have to deal with a profusion of features. And, in truth, it’s not so bad in our opinion: it allows you to get straight to the point, without getting lost in complex and sometimes unhelpful settings.

Especially since the essentials are there: vertical steam, water spray and an adjustment wheel to adapt to all types of fabric are the features offered.

You don’t need more, because the Rowenta Focus II benefits from an excellent design. The slender shape of its soleplate allows you to iron collars, pocket contours and corners without any difficulty.

What’s more, it is a patented Microsteam400 soleplate: you benefit from a more even and efficient steam distribution thanks to 400 pores.

The 300 ml (10 fl. oz.) reservoir ensures a very suitable autonomy for regular and family use. In addition, the comfortable 1700 watts of power provide fast heating: the Rowenta Focus II can be used faster than many of its competitors.

As you can imagine, in this price range you are entitled to excellent manufacturing quality and a safe, drip-proof and anti-scaling design with automatic switch-off.

If you really need power and comfort, and if you use the iron frequently, the investment should pay for itself fairly quickly.

Black+Decker Light ‘N Easy

You buy an iron out of obligation, and your main concern is to preserve your budget? If the clothes you iron are relatively ordinary, you can settle for an affordable model that goes to the essentials, such as the Black+Decker Light ‘N Easy.

What people think of the Black+Decker Light ‘N Easy

In general, when choosing an affordable unit, the main concern is a shortened life span. But here, you don’t have to worry: Black+Decker remains true to its good reputation, and offers solid equipment, perfectly capable of accompanying you for a long time and guaranteed for 2 years.

It is on power that you will have to accept small concessions. It is 1200 watts, which is comfortable but a little lower than the market average. In other words: you will have to wait a little longer than on other models before the iron is ready to iron.

This seems reasonable to us, as long as you still enjoy good versatility. Indeed, the knob allows you to choose between six temperature levels. In addition, this model features SmartSteamTM technology, which automatically adjusts the steam flow according to your settings.

The Black+Decker Light ‘N Easy has another great advantage: its manoeuvrability. The product is lighter than most of its competitors, and you benefit from a swivel power cord. You are never bothered and you have very little effort to put in when ironing your clothes.

The non-stick soleplate offers good accuracy without damaging the fabric.

There are not too many features, but you still have the option of spraying water to make it easier for you when you’re faced with a crease.

If you have a moderate budget and rarely iron more fragile garments (silk, etc.) this iron should be just right for you.

I think this is the case on almost all irons sold today, but the manufacturer puts it forward.

The most comfortable handling.
Non-drip design and non-stick sole, ultra-lightweight device.
SmartSteamTM technology that automatically adjusts the steam flow.
6-stage thermostat knob to treat different types of textiles.
360° swivel cord that won’t get tangled or bother you.
Water spray function to treat creases.
1200 watts.
Warranty: 2 years.

Feather price
Light and easy to handle
Spray function

Limited power

Our verdict

The Black+Decker Light ‘N Easy is not the fastest or most powerful iron on the market, but it is still powerful, easy to handle and inexpensive. If you have a limited budget, or if you want to use a light iron, we really recommend it.

Black+Decker Allure

Black+Decker Allure

You have very little tolerance for creases and you see ironing as an essential way to sublimate clothes? In that case, you are probably looking for a high-precision iron that can adapt to a wide variety of textiles. The Black+Decker Allure could meet your expectations.

What we think of the Black+Decker Allure

The most interesting feature of this model is that it allows you to control the steam flow and temperature separately. This gives you much greater modularity and accuracy than most competitors. It’s very comfortable if you know exactly what you want.

If you’re a little less sure of yourself, rest assured, there’s no reason to panic. Indeed, a display takes care to show you the optimal steam flow according to the selected temperature. This makes the iron suitable for beginners as well as for those who are used to this type of appliance.

It also benefits from Dynamic Steam technology, which can deliver up to 30% more steam than some competitors. In concrete terms, this means that the iron can go faster and achieve a better result, especially on less sensitive garments.

It is possible to use the Black+Decker Allure in an upright position, keeping your garment on a hanger. Thanks to its 1600 watts power, the device is rather quick to heat up.

It is also well secured and robust. As it is self-cleaning, it has a longer life span without you having to get too involved in maintenance. The automatic shut-off function prevents disasters.

However, we do have one small regret: the thumbwheel, which is battery-powered under the handle, is not as easy to read as we would like, and some characters may tend to fade slightly.

The most accurate.
Dynamic Steam technology, efficient ironing and impeccable rendering.
Independent temperature and steam controls for greater adaptability.
Self-cleaning system to maintain top performance.
Automatic shut-off and display with steam flow tips.
Vertical use possible.
120V / 1600 watts.
Reservoir: 380 ml / 13 fl oz.
Dimensions: 29*14.7 cm/ 11.4*5.8 in.

Steam and temperature controls
Dynamic Steam
Versatility and precision

Lack of legibility of the wheel

Our verdict

The Black+Decker Allure is an iron that lives up to its name: if you want to have an impeccable presentation thanks to precise ironing, you should like it very much, all the more so as the price/quality ratio is very good. On the other hand, the temperature dial could have been more legible.

Sunbeam Steam Master

Sunbeam Steam Master

You wish to acquire an iron that is practical, easy to store and capable of removing wrinkles from your clothes and sheets? The Sunbeam Steam Master is a model designed to be easy to handle horizontally and vertically, rather affordable on the Web, which can meet your expectations.

What we think of the Sunbeam Steam Master

This model is very effective if you hold it horizontally and vertically. If you often have to iron sheets or pillowcases, it can be particularly useful.

Naturally, it works very well with clothes too. Its soleplate benefits from a specific shape, which makes it easier to remove wrinkles from cuffs and lapels, or around buttons.

As for the use, it is very simple, since it is enough to press the adequate buttons. A steam adjustment switch is provided to adapt your use to the treated fabric. The iron being self-cleaning, you will enjoy a long life without having to intervene much.

However, some buyers note that the product gives them a slightly weaker feeling of solidity than other models. That being said, as long as you have a 3-year limited warranty and a lifetime warranty on the soleplate, the purchase seems quite safe to us.

The power offered is 1400 watts, which is pretty good. The unit has an automatic shut-off system if you leave it too long in the wrong position.

For us, this is an advantage, but some people who work with textiles find the stop in certain positions a little too fast.

One of our favorite features of this product is the long retractable power cable. This greatly increases your working comfort (especially since the Sunbeam Steam Master is very light) while making storing the iron much less stressful.

The best for tapestry and drapery.
Able to project steam, horizontally or vertically.
Easy adjustments with the steam switch.
Anti-drip device with automatic stop depending on the position.
Sole shape suitable for ironing cuffs, lapels, collars, etc.
2.4 m / 8 ft retractable cord for easy storage.
1400 watts.
Dimensions: 13.9*30.2*15.7 cm / 5.5*11.9*6.2 in.
Weight: 1.3 kg / 2.8 lb.
Warranty: limited, 3 years (lifetime sole warranty).

Very easy to use vertically
Retractable cord
Solid guarantees

Warm-up time after shutdown

Our verdict

If you often plan to treat sheets, and want your iron to work beautifully in the upright position, the Sunbeam Steam Master is a good option that combines light weight, versatility and convenient storage. On the other hand, the quick auto shut-off feature may not appeal to specific users.

Maytag M400

Maytag M400

You don’t like to wait long before starting ironing, and when you’re doing a household task, you want to go as fast as possible without taking too much of your time? A top-of-the-line, responsive and intuitive iron like the Maytag M400 may be just what you’re looking for.

What we think of the Maytag M400

Let’s not beat about the bush, the big advantage of this product is its heating speed, as it takes only 55 seconds to reach the maximum temperature. Moreover, the steam regenerates in 3 seconds. You are thus rid of long and frustrating waiting times.

In fact, intuitiveness seems to be the key word here. For example, to choose the temperature, you simply turn the knob, on which the fabrics to be treated according to your setting (linen, cotton, silk, wool, nylon, etc.) are simply indicated.

We really like the handle of the Maytag M400: it offers a simple and comfortable grip, whether you are in a vertical or horizontal position. Moreover, note that in the vertical position, to quickly smooth your clothes, this iron does a great job.

It is not only the use that is simple, the maintenance too. With this product, there are no unpleasant surprises, and there is little effort to make since it is equipped with a self-cleaning feature.

On the quality of manufacture, we have nothing to say: in accordance with the price range, the device offers excellent durability and a very good feeling of robustness.

However, we do have one small regret with this model: the water tank is a little smaller than average. This is not a big deal because it is easy to fill up and the rapid heating compensates well, however a larger tank would have made the use even more comfortable than it already is.

The most reactive.
Heats up super fast (55 seconds to reach max. temperature).
Steam regeneration in 3 seconds.
Dial displaying the type of fabric to be treated.
Ergonomic handle for easy handling, even in vertical position.
Self-cleaning system to increase the durability of the iron.
1500 watts.
Reservoir: 236 ml /8 fl oz.
Dimensions: 14*28.4 cm / 5.5*11.2 in.
Weight: 1.5 kg / 3.3 lb.
Warranty: 2 years.

Super fast to heat
Very good manoeuvrability
Intuitive settings

Tank a little small

Our verdict

If you iron a small number of clothes very often, the Maytag M400 is the ideal iron for you. Whether it’s for use or maintenance, you don’t feel any frustration, and the grip is really smooth. It’s a shame, though, that the tank isn’t just a little bit bigger.

Rowenta Eco Intelligence

Rowenta Eco Intelligence

Rowenta ensures that it remains at the forefront in the field of irons. If you are looking for an original appliance that takes into account the new requirements of modernity and can be used easily whether you are left- or right-handed, the Rowenta Eco Intelligence is the right choice.

What people think of Rowenta Eco Intelligence

It is certainly not a key feature of an iron, but it is hard not to notice the design of this model, which features a pretty black and green dress with plant motifs. In terms of performance, it has no influence, but it’s nicer than a dull, all-black or all-white iron.

Don’t worry: the Rowenta Eco Intelligence is not just pretty, it’s also very efficient, with a special feature. It consumes 25% less energy for a classic continuous steam flow of 35 g/min. That’s better for the planet and for your bills.

It does this thanks to a specific, patented sole with 400 micro-perforations that allow a better distribution of steam.

It also features Eco Steam technology to ensure optimal steam flow. Dry and Boost modes are also present for finishing or express ironing.

Note that the appliance has a cleverly designed trigger, which is just as comfortable for left-handed and right-handed users alike, which can make a difference for a number of users.

The spray and vertical steam jet are also present.

The 1700 watts of power and the 300 ml (10 fl. oz.) reservoir ensure rapid heating and a long operating time.

The main reason why the Rowenta Eco Intelligence closes our list is because its price is usually quite high online and tends to vary.

The most ecological device.
Special design saving 25% energy with 100% efficiency.
Microsteam400 3D sole, allowing to concentrate the steam.
Eco Steam technology for better steam flow management.
Trigger suitable for both left- and right-handed users.
Original, green aesthetics with vegetal patterns.
1700 watts.
Steam flow rate: 35 g/min.
Reservoir: 300 ml / 10 fl. oz.
Weight: 1.6 kg / 3.5 lb.
Warranty: 1 year.

Ecological aspect
Numerous and useful features
Suitable for left and right-handed people

High and variable price

Our verdict

The Rowenta Eco Intelligence is a little more expensive than average and has a design that is original for an iron, to say Cons:, but it is an excellent product that combines efficiency, respect for environmental issues and good design ideas. It’s up to you to see if it seems to justify the price.

Things to know before buying an iron

You don’t want to make a mistake, and you want to eliminate small hesitations? To help you see more clearly, we suggest you answer a small series of questions. They will help you better define your needs and establish a coherent budget.

Do I need an iron? Should I buy a power station instead?

The main argument for power plants is their efficiency: you take less time to iron. It’s true, however, in practice most people who buy a power station end up buying an iron as a supplement.

Why is that? Because irons have an undeniable advantage: much better handling. They are easier to move and store, but also easier to handle. It’s much more pleasant when working on lapels, pockets, around buttons, etc.

In addition, irons (even high-end ones) are generally cheaper than steam plants. We advise you to use steam ironing stations especially if you frequently have very large quantities of garments to iron regularly. Otherwise, the iron will generally prove to be better adapted.

Is an entry-level model enough for me?

Usually, we iron mainly family clothes, which are often made of synthetic materials. In this context, all irons are able to offer a satisfactory result.

There are two situations in which it becomes relevant to look at more high-end models.

Firstly, if you cannot tolerate the slightest crease, and if you want the presentation of the outfits to be perfectly impeccable.

Then, if you are a fashion lover and you have clothes made of more sensitive or fragile materials (linen, silk…).

Have I thought about security issues?

Most irons work by producing steam and with a very hot metal soleplate. In other words: be careful when handling them, and do not leave them within the reach of children or pets, who could be seriously injured.

All the models we offer in this guide comply with North American safety standards. However, on the Web, there are imported products of more questionable quality. Remain vigilant, and prefer to buy from a safe source.

Our selection criteria for buying an iron

It’s time to make a purchase, but you’re stuck? It must be said that understanding the specifics of each device is not always easy. But don’t worry: it’s all about knowing how to identify the key points. Here are the criteria that will allow you to objectively evaluate the value of an iron.

Entry-level irons usually cost about $25 or $30. They are not very feature-rich, but may be enough for some people.

The best value for money is between $40 and $60.

The high-end models that are strong, fast and feature-rich are sold for around $100-120.

Steam flow

Steam flow is one of the most important characteristics of irons. The higher it is, the more efficient they are.

However, many manufacturers do not display it.

It is therefore important to rely on customer reviews or guides to get a better idea of the performance offered.

A fairly standard flow rate (and sufficient for the vast majority of tasks) is 35 grams/minute. Be careful: some brands, instead of displaying the continuous flow rate, display the maximum achievable flow rate, often much higher, but only available for a few moments in boost mode.

The power

It is often around 1500 watts. More than the ironing efficiency, it is the heating time that the power has an impact. A more powerful appliance is generally usable more quickly.

The soleplate

It is very often made of stainless steel. Today, the vast majority of soles are profiled or equipped with a notch. The purpose is to facilitate the ironing of certain areas such as lapels, cuffs, etc.. Some soles have numerous micro-perforations to offer a more homogeneous ironing.

The tank

The classic capacity of the iron tanks is 300 ml, which corresponds to 10 fl oz. The larger the tank, the more autonomy you have, which can be important if you often iron a large quantity of clothes at once.

The vast majority of irons allow you to adjust the temperature. Usually, the dial does not indicate the precise temperature, but the type of fabric treated by each setting. The adjustment is almost always made by means of a knob placed directly under the handle.

On some models, it is also possible to select the steam flow rate separately. This can be useful if you know exactly what you are doing, and if you are treating textiles with a particular design or composed of several materials that are very different from each other.

There are also frequently available features, such as vertical spraying or spraying, which are respectively useful for quickly straightening a garment or ironing drapery and for dealing with creases more quickly.

Limescale can form over time, but most appliances have an automatic cleaning function, even when the price is low. It is therefore relatively rare that you have to invest a lot in cleaning the iron.

A large handle is a plus, as is a long cable. It offers easier handling, you’ll have less trouble removing creases and sliding the sole on clothes.

We advise you, if possible, to use a light iron (not exceeding about 1.5-1.7 kg). Ironing sessions are sometimes longer than expected, and this can become very unpleasant if the weight of the iron is felt too much.
